Matthew 25:15
Have you ever looked at someone at church or maybe at home and thought to yourself, “Man... If only...” It is common for us to compare, contrast, and measure ourselves to the other people around us. This is what I call, “Quality by Comparison” and it never works. We will always find something we like, think is better, or are just plain jealous of in someone else. This is where I believe this parable can help us a little bit. In the verse for today we see that the Master in Jesus’ teaching distributed three different sums of money to three different servants. Notice the end of the first sentence in verse 15. The Master gave the different amounts to the different servants because of “their own ability.” The Master knew His servants! This tri-level distribution is not the product of random chance or luck of the draw, it is precisely because the Master knew His servants and knew how much responsibility they could handle! This is comforting to me. When I look at someone like Chris Tomlin, or example, and begin to feel myself being jealous of his singing voice or the fame that the Lord has allowed him to have, I remind myself that the Master knows His servants. The Lord has chosen to give me the gifts and abilities that I have, and it really isn’t my place to be jealous of or even to compare myself to anyone else. The Lord knows our hearts... better than we know ourselves, and He knows what we can handle.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I admit that I get caught up in jealousy and comparing myself to others too often. Please help me to find contentment and trust You in what You’ve given me. Amen.
Reflection:
What do you feel the Lord has entrusted you with?
What are you doing with it?
