False Accusation

Genesis 39: 6-20

Have you ever been accused of an wrong activity that you know you did not do? I know we have all  been called on the carpet for things that we have done wrong, and rightly deserved to be corrected. But, what about those rare times when someone falsely accuses you of doing something you absolutely did not do? I wish I could tell you that I do not have any experience with this, but I do. Over the years in ministry people have fired arrows and lobbed grenades at my character and family. Thankfully, none of these accusations have been true and the Lord has rooted out the accusations without too much harm to my family. But, let's be honest, it is never fun or enjoyable to be falsely accused of something. Even more so when the activity in question is sinful and deplorable. In our reading today, Joseph is falsely accused of attempted rape. After rebuffing multiple requests to commit adultery with his master's wife, Potiphar's wife is scorned and accuses Joseph of attempted rape sending him to jail in the palace prison. We are quick to accept the fact that God is moving in Joseph's life, because we can read the whole story in one sitting. But, for Joseph, this false accusation sent him to prison for years! Don't forget the characters in the Biblical narratives were real people who didn't know the end of their own stories. This false accusation came with very real consequences. Yet, we know that Joseph was not in fact guilty at all! Another lesson we today must take from the story of Joseph is how to deal with false accusation when it comes. Nothing in the text shows us that Joseph ever lapsed or lagged in his trusting in God. Joseph knew his integrity was in tact. In fact, even in the prison, God was blessing Joseph. Could you say the same thing the last time you dealt with a false accusation? I can tell you I haven't. I hate being falsely accused. But, if there is one thing I can share with you, it is this: despite my emotional ups and downs, I fully believe God has a plan and is working through the circumstances of my life to accomplish what is best for His Kingdom through my life. I invite you to join me in my commitment to always trust God, holding onto courageous faith, even in the midst of false accusation.

Prayer:
Holy Spirit, please touch my heart and help me to live a life that reflects Your love and grace for Your creation. Please, Lord, help me to respond to false accusation with trust in You and not anger at my accuser. Use me Lord. I am ready to serve You. Amen.

Reflection:
How have you responded to false accusation in the past?
How do you plan to deal with it in the future to honor your trust in God more?
