Just Happened

Exodus 2:8b-10

I think we can get distracted by the Bible at times. When we are reading the stories of Scripture and see God moving, it is easy to see because we can see the whole story. When we are living our daily lives, we can only see what has come before that moment. But, every now and again, if we are paying attention, we may just see a moment that we can see God moving in our midst. Our reading today is that moment for Miriam. After her courageous conversation with the princess of Egypt, she goes and gets her mother and returns to the riverside. Once Jochebed makes it to the princess, she is given royal instructions to care for baby Moses. Whether the princess knew that Moses was Jochebed's baby is unclear. Nothing in the text suggest that she does. I'm sure from the princess's perspective, there "just happened" to be a little girl and then "just happened" to be a female slave willing to care for this abandoned baby. From the perspective of the reader, who realizes God is moving, it doesn't look like random chance at all. Because of Miriam's courage in the midst of oppression and fear, God redeemed His chosen deliverer and restored their family in one single motion. Yet, that's not all. Not only does Moses get to return to his family, but at this point, Moses is considered the child of the princess and thus is under the protection of the royal family. Furthermore, the princess pays Jochebed to raise Moses for her! If this isn't an amazing example of the Lord moving and providentially working in the midst of his people, I don't know what would be. I think we need to remember that while this looks like a clear example of God's hand in motion from our perspective, not everyone in the moment saw it.

Prayer:
God of Heaven, You are the Sovereign King of the universe. I know and trust that no other authority is higher or greater than Yours. I also trust that You are still working out Your plans in the lives of mankind. Please help me to be aware and attuned to what You are doing and not miss it or think it just "happened to" be that way. Lead me Lord, I am read to follow. Amen.

Reflection:
What is God doing in your life this week?
Do you see God moving in anyone else's life that they don't see?
How will you tell them?
