The Personal God

Jeremiah 1:5

We sometimes can drift into thinking that God Almighty is a removed and distant Zeusian character who sits on His throne in the clouds and just watches the hustle and bustle as mankind scurries about our little planet. This is a lie. In fact, you almost can’t get farther from the truth. The God of the Bible, Jehovah, the one true God, is a loving, caring, and merciful Creator who is very personal. In our verse today, we see that God knew us even before we were born. He hand crafted us in our mother’s womb. As we were still taking shape and growing into our new life, God was there. The word in ancient Hebrew for formed has the connotation of a potter, making something out of clay. What we might call today hand-crafted. God’s plan for our lives is equally personal. Look at how our verse today closes. The Lord spoke directly to Jeremiah and called to a specific job. I don’t think the Lord has changed, He still desires to call us personally to His side and service. Sadly, because we often take the distant view of God, we can miss His voice, presence, and calling all together.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I know that You are never distant or removed from me. Though I admit, sometimes I am from You. I’m sorry Lord. I want to be close and connected to You. I want to be personal with You. Amen.

Discussion/Reflection Questions: How does the image of God hand-crafting us in the womb affect your view of God’s love and/or involvement in Your life?
